Recent devastating floods that ravaged Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts in Nepal have brought renewed attention to the potential utility of an abandoned mountain airstrip, Langtang Airport. The floods, which caused widespread landslides and altered the landscape, severely hampered air rescue and relief operations, highlighting the challenges faced when the primary means of access is compromised. Veteran aviation officials and pilots are recalling the Langtang airstrip, a facility largely forgotten by younger generations, as a potentially valuable asset during such crises.

During the recent emergency, the lack of an air traffic control tower forced military and civilian helicopters to operate under military supervision from an open area, creating logistical challenges. Experts suggest that an operational Langtang airport, capable of handling small, 19-seat aircraft, could have significantly eased the burden on helicopter operations. It is estimated that five helicopter trips for relief supplies or passenger transport could have been replaced by a single flight to an airstrip, and that an equipped airport with proper communication and air traffic management could have streamlined helicopter movements more efficiently. Gyanendra Bhul, an information officer for the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, stated, "If the Langtang airport had been operational, it could have provided significant support for relief and rescue operations." The scale of the recent air traffic, with nearly 1,000 take-offs and landings in the affected areas over a week, underscores the potential benefits of an alternative landing site.

Langtang Airport, situated at an elevation of 3,658 meters (approximately 12,000 feet) above sea level, features a short, unpaved runway measuring 420 meters in length and 30 meters in width. In its operational days, the airstrip, though basic, was crucial for connecting remote areas of Rasuwa to the outside world, facilitating the transport of tourists, project supplies, and charter passengers via single-engine Pilatus Porter aircraft. Despite being listed in official Civil Aviation Authority records with an ICAO airport code, it remains "not in operation."

The recent floods, believed to be triggered by a large mass of ice and rock collapsing from a glacier in the Himalayas, have caused immense devastation, with hundreds of deaths and thousands missing.
