5 Things Parents Should Never Say to Their Children

5 Things Parents Should Never Say to Their Children

Parenting is not only about providing food, education and shelter. It is also about shaping the voice that a child will eventually carry within themselves.

As parents, we sometimes speak out of frustration, disappointment or anger. But children may forget the punishment they received and still remember the words that made them feel worthless, unwanted or incapable.

Correction is part of responsible parenting. Humiliation is not.

Here are five statements every parent should think twice before saying.

1. “You will never become anything.”

A child's failure today does not determine who they will become tomorrow.

Children make mistakes. They struggle. They sometimes perform below expectations. But a mistake should be corrected without destroying their confidence.

Instead of attacking their future, address their behaviour:

“What you did was wrong, but you can learn from it and do better next time.”

Teach your child that failure is something to learn from, not a permanent identity.

2. “Why can't you be like your brother, sister or that other child?”

Comparison is a dangerous parenting tool.

Every child develops differently. One may excel academically, another creatively. One may be naturally confident, while another needs more encouragement.

Constant comparison can make children feel that your love and approval depend on them becoming someone else.

Challenge your child to grow, but let them grow into who they were created to become.

Celebrate progress, not comparison.

3. “I wish I had never had you.”

Never make your child question whether they are wanted.

Parenting can be exhausting. Children can test our patience. There will be moments when a parent feels overwhelmed.

But frustration should never become permission to attack a child's sense of belonging.

If you are angry, step away, calm down and return to the conversation when you can speak responsibly.

Discipline the behaviour without making the child feel like the problem is their existence.

4. “You are just a child. You know nothing.”

Being young does not mean having nothing valuable to contribute.

Children ask questions because they are learning. They express opinions because they are developing their understanding of the world.

A parent does not have to agree with everything a child says, but they should create an environment where the child can speak, ask questions and be heard.

Listen before you dismiss. Teach before you ridicule.

Sometimes, understanding your child's perspective can reveal a problem you did not know existed.

5. “After everything I've done for you, you owe me.”

Children should learn gratitude, responsibility and respect.

However, parenting should not become an emotional transaction where every sacrifice is later used as a weapon.

You chose to become their parent. Your responsibility is to raise them with values, discipline, love and guidance.

The goal is not to make your children permanently indebted to you.

The goal is to raise adults who are responsible enough to stand on their own and compassionate enough to help others.

Give them values to hold onto.

Give them boundaries to guide them.

Give them confidence to face the world.

And when the time comes, give them the freedom to build their own lives responsibly.

A MESSAGE FROM TRUE TALK ARENA CHARITY FOUNDATION

Dear Parents,

Your children are listening, even when you think they are not.

The way you speak to them today can influence the way they speak to themselves tomorrow.

So, correct them without destroying them.

Discipline them without humiliating them.

Set boundaries without withholding love.

Listen to them without making them afraid to speak.

And remind them that making a mistake does not make them a failure.

Children do not need perfect parents. They need parents who are willing to learn, apologise, communicate and grow with them.

Let us raise children who know their worth, understand responsibility and have the confidence to become the best version of themselves.
